Matthew 8:5-13, the account of the Roman Centurion who comes to Jesus in need of a miracle for his paralyzed son, provides the Scriptural text for this message on spiritual authority and the power of faith. This strong soldier—a man of power and earthly authority–humbles himself before Jesus, who is the ultimate authority over heaven and earth, in complete faith. In desperate need of a miracle, the centurion goes to the source, to the miracle worker who alone can heal his son. Moved by this loving father, Jesus says “I will go and heal him,” but the centurion replies, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word and my servant will be healed.” Astonished at this demonstration of great faith, Jesus says, “Go! It will be done just as you believed it would.” And the centurion’s son was healed “at that very hour.” Here, in a brief encounter, we see not only the awesome power of God, but the awesome power of faith to move the source of our power. And the good news is that Jesus is the same today as He was when he healed the centurion’s son.
